Jail history is useful for understanding capacity and operations. The sheriff's jail history page says the 1998 Justice Center complex included Sheriff's Administration, Jail, and Work Release with 149 beds. A 2008 renovation added intake and processing space. Planning that began in 2016 led to upgraded booking, medical services, kitchen, video courtroom, and a secure vehicle sally port. The page says the jail was remodeled and updated in 2024 and now has up to 178 inmate beds, with an average daily population listed at roughly 60 to 130 inmates.
Montrose County Booking Records

The jail overview states that inmates receive three meals per day delivered to cells, that special diets are accommodated as required, and that healthcare is provided. Mail must be addressed to Montrose County Jail, "Inmate's Name," 1200 N. Grand Ave., Montrose, CO 81401. All incoming mail is opened and inspected before delivery. Each item must include a clear return name and complete return address. Incoming legal mail is opened only in the inmate's presence and inspected for contraband. Legal mail means mail from a licensed attorney, a judge of any court of record, the Attorney General, or the Governor. Packages are not accepted for inmates.

Montrose Inmate Funds
Money can be delivered in person to the Montrose County Jail, and personal checks are not accepted. Funds can also be deposited online through JailATM. Commissary items may be purchased only by inmates with available funds, and gift packs can be sent through JailATM. The same vendor route is used for some bond payments when the sheriff's bond instructions direct a person to the kiosk or online process.
Bonds are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. The jail accepts cash and surety bonds only. Property bonds are handled through the courts, not the jail. A $30 booking fee and $10 bonding fee per bond are assessed to the inmate's account, but the sheriff page repeats that bond fees, booking fees, and other fees or debts do not need to be paid to secure release on a money bond. Personal checks are not accepted for any amount.
